The Fractured Garden
The gardeners inherited a magnificent garden, teeming with countless species cultivated over billions of years. Though sharing one garden, they divided it with invisible lines, convinced their section alone was sacred.
They created elaborate hierarchies among themselves based on the shade of their skin, the shape of their eyes, and where their ancestors first tilled the soil. Their leaders crafted intricate tales of enemies beyond and within, stoking fear while secretly trading with those same “enemies.” The strongest gardeners built machines that could burn entire sections in moments, pointing them at each other across the dividing lines.
While they warred and squabbled over which gardening method was supreme, they unknowingly united in one effort: draining the soil, poisoning the waters, and altering the very air. When neighboring gardens sent warnings through subtle signs, the gardeners—divided by hatred yet united in destruction—continued their folly, deaf to the whispers of collapse surrounding them, blind to the reality that no invisible line could halt the garden’s dying breath.
